2013 MTV VMA's Highlights Review

So last night was the MTV Video Music Awards and to say there was plenty of drama and controversy would be quite the understatement! I watched the Red Carpet and Pre-Show streams before the actual awards started to see what everyone was wearing and to see a few of the performances (Ariana Grande was very cute).

The Awards show was opened by Lady Gaga performing her new single "Applause", which obviously as a huge fan I was very excited about! The performance consisted of her showing herself in four different eras from the Fame eras to the new Artpop era, with her various iconic wigs and outfits. I'd say her performance was slightly more toned down than at previous shows however it was still gripping and entertaining as usual! Gaga also made a point at the beginning of her performance by adding boos to highlight the fact that she has had a difficult time with the media and particularly the fans in the past few months as there has been a delay with new music etc but she was willing to take it on the chin and move past it by putting out an amazing performance.

Just Dance, Applause, Telephone

The second lot of artists to take the stage were One Direction to present "Best Pop Video". Now I'm a big fan of the "reaction cams" at the MTV Awards ceremonies and an even bigger fan of when they catch another celebrity or artist badmouthing the act that are on stage. At this particular time when One Direction were introducing the award and announcing the nominees, a reaction cam was pointed at Taylor Swift and captured her saying "Shut the Fuck Up" while the boys, in particular Harry Styles, were speaking. All I can say is when there's cameras pointed at you from every angle and you have a following of impressionable teenage fans, you should probably watch your mouth and continue to enjoy the wrath of millions of doting 1D fans! I mean, MTV's official Tumblr page created a gif of you saying it girl!

S0ULNINETIES officially declares you a hater T-SWIVEL
Moving swiftly on (no pun intended), the next performance was from Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke and 2 Chainz. Now Miley's taken on her new "grown up" and "risque" appearance, she has vastly changed her performance style and is making quite the rebel out of herself. First point, she has now decided she is not friends with clothing and will wear the smallest things that she can.. second point, she is suddenly the proclaimed queen of twerking? I don't think so honey! No, to be fair I do enjoy the new style she has taken on but in terms of grinding against Robin Thicke when there are still young girls who look up to her, despite her not being on disney anymore, she could probably tone it down. I know she has taken a step away from the tween scene but a lot of people still look at her as a role model, but how she shows that is up to her and kudos to enjoying her 20's and making a performance that will be remembered! I enjoyed the mix up of 'We Can't Stop', 'Blurred Lines' and 'Give It To You' and think performances genuinely work better and attract more attention when there is a variety of music genres and elements.

I'm sure Robin is enjoying himself!

My personal favourite reaction shot from the Smith family watching Miley
After more awards, and some more Taylor Swift attention-seeking, came the time for Justin Timberlake to perform and accept his moon man for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award.
Jimmy Fallon rightly introduces him as the 'President of Pop' before he takes the stage with the biggest medley of all his best hits and also a segment with the rest of N'SYNC with was obviously the biggest crowd pleaser! The reaction cams showed everyone on their feet dancing through the whole performance and when it was time for him to accept the award he was thoroughly genuine and modest and he looked amazed and grateful for the response he was getting from the audience and all the other artists. It's an exciting thing to think Justin has come so far yet he's got so much left to show for himself and the 20/20 experience is just the beginning!

Reunited and it feels so good!

I hope you've enjoyed my review/critique of the highlights of the VMA's, I enjoyed watching it and will probably be talking about the main performances for the rest of the week!

More celeb gossip posts to come..
